ENGINEER YOUR TEACHING
How educators use the principles of learning in their courses, helping students succeed
Consulting for educators at any level or experience, tailored to your unique situation
How do you Engineer Your Teaching?
In the last few decades, researchers in the fields of psychology, cognitive science, and other parts of the learning sciences have performed studies on how humans learn. Theorists and practitioners have worked together to identify a set of foundational principles of learning; these principles of learning describe the ways that humans best learn and give recommendations for structuring learning experiences.
“Engineer Your Teaching” takes a methodical approach to applying the principles of learning in your courses, helping you design and execute learning experiences that create the conditions for students to reach their learning potential. The engineering takes place in every aspect of a course:
-
Curriculum design
-
Instructional strategies
-
Assessment practices
Each of these aspects benefit from applying the principles of learning, with specific guidelines for curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
By taking a methodical approach to Engineer Your Teaching, you will give students the greatest opportunity to reach their learning potential and succeed in your course — and beyond!

Founder's Note
Hello! This is Nathan Belcher, founder of Engineer Your Teaching.
Engineer Your Teaching exists to support the professional learning of educators, helping educators infuse their curriculum, instructional, and assessment strategies with the principles of learning. Any educator is welcome here — whether you are a learning or instructional designer for a business, at a technical school or university, or in a traditional public or private P-12 school.
As a professional educator, I constantly strive to create the best possible courses for my students. I’ve relentlessly researched and implemented ideas from psychology, cognitive science, and other learning sciences research — leading to classes that are designed to be fully compatible with the principles of learning. I went so deep into the research that I completed a Doctorate in Education, focusing on constructing high school physics courses that were consistent with the principles of learning.
The principles of learning are applicable when building a curriculum, implementing instructional practices, and assessing student learning. Any educator who creates courses that are consistent with the principles of learning will enable their students to learn more quickly and robustly, creating the conditions for students to reach their learning potential.
I greatly enjoy conversations with educators; the work you do with your colleagues and students is incredibly important! To discuss the ways you can use the principles of learning in your classes and create the conditions for students to reach their learning potential, complete the form below.
I am looking forward to a conversation!
